Manslaughter itself is defined as the killing of another person, when this was not planned ahead of time or was unintentional. There are several classifications of manslaughter outlined in Florida legislation, all of which typically carry different penalties:
Voluntary Manslaughter – this involves an action which was intentional but was not planned ahead of time. An example would be killing another person in the “heat of passion” or because he or she provoked you.
Involuntary Manslaughter – this refers to the unintentional killing of another person, but usually includes a degree of recklessness or criminal negligence. This is often referred to as a “criminally negligent homicide.”
Vehicular Manslaughter – this usually a form of involuntary manslaughter where a person’s recklessness or negligence while driving leads to the death of another person. This may also include a death as the result of DUI (driving under the influence).
No matter what manslaughter charge you are facing, you may end up serving extensive time in prison if you do not work with a skilled criminal defense lawyer.
